Christian Book (+1 Other) Reviews
I don't have a lot of people interested in the same things I am, and lately that's been Christian books. I used to be big into self help, which I think has prepared me a lot for my reading list through the Christian books I find so interesting. A do a little bit of reading outside of Christian books, but I enjoy this a lot.
To be honest, I haven't finished some of them either. I struggle with ADHD, so I often start a bunch, but never finish them. I just want to share thoughts!
No, I will not include links or anything here - because I don't want you to get the idea here that I am marketing of any sort. I am not. I am making no money off this... it's just me being able to express myself publicly. Maybe I'll make money in the future, but as of original writing of this article, I am not. It's just some honest thoughts from a dude who read these and don't really have anyone to share the experience with.
Anyway, I have a lot I've read, but I've decided to put some of my recent reads here, so as to not overwhelm the article. Rapid fire style!
The Pursuit of God - A.W. Tozer
I am told by the internet that this is a Christian classic and I understand why. He apparently wrote this book during a long train ride. I am only halfway through it honestly, and I really love how both direct and deep it is. It's more like he just had a bunch of thoughts on his relationship with God, and has experiences and situations that really made him think about it all... then he wrote it in a book. He uses scripture, quotes theologians of old, and various other sources to prove and validate his points. It is kind of intense honestly.
From the very first chapter about following God hard, to the subsequent chapters explaining his thoughts on the spiritual side of things, I can see why this is considered a classic. This is actually a book I am purposely just not cruising through because it's content is dense. I have to read a chapter and sit with it a while. Read another. Maybe once I am finished, I'll have more to say.
Waking The Dead - John Eldredge
This is one of those Mardel clearance section books I picked up on a whim, and while I am about 2/3's through it, it's been very impactful. The book isn't focused on any sort of like... how you say... practical "do these things to live a fuller life" or things like that. I've seen a few of those, and I have a few of those I didn't get very far in.
What this book actually does, is spend a long time getting you to understand how your heart is very different from your brain, mind, and body. I love the way it uses it as a central point, and constantly uses scripture, research, and quotes to get it across. Could not recommend more.
Holy Vulnerability - Kellye Fabian
I will admit, I am not terrible far into this book, but so far it's all been about how you can be anything with God, and you should be. That vulnerability is what makes us human and allows for us to grow and heal. I don't have much else to say I guess, because it all seems common sense to me.
Decent so far... if I ever finish it, I'll update you.
+1 - Don't Believe Everything You Think - Joseph Nguyen
I mean, it's good... maybe a little more meant for someone less insightful than myself. I spend a lot of time dissecting my own mind, and the human mind in general, so nothing in this book surprised me, but it reinforced basically one simple message; you are not your thoughts, you are not your feelings, you are awareness. Just saved you a book. I am kidding actually!
Honestly, I am ADHD, so the worksheets at the end I won't stick to, half the book was just spent reinforcing the same concept, but applied to different areas of life. It wasn't a bad book, definitely recommend to anyone who needs some insightful views of your brain. For me, it was real impactful for about 25 pages, and then the impact was done for me.
Anyway, as I get through more books, or I come across books which I've read in the past, I'll post some more. In the meantime, happy reading!
