God’s Creativity
God is creative… no? I mean, you couldn’t be creative if not for the world being created. Some of the deepest experiences you have in life come from unique circumstances that were creative in their inception. We are also made in God’s image (Genesis 1:27), and I would argue that one of God’s greatest character traits is his creative abilities, which are boundless in nature. There’s nothing you can‘t see in this world that doesn’t serve a purpose for something… and I would argue that doesn’t happen by accident.
Somehow though, we as people tend to view creativity as an “optional” trait. We label folks as “creative types” and tend to think of it as optional; but what if creativity isn’t a gift, but rather it’s in your nature?
Let’s take ourselves back to Genesis. God took the world, the Holy Spirit flew across the waters (Genesis 1:2). He took something that was shapeless and formless to create everything we know of today. Justice, sacrifice, even time… created. Ecosystems of animals flourish the Earth. When it came to humans, he did something different, creative even, where he used his own breath to give us life.
Fast forward to the tumultuous times of Israel; He used Prophets for messaging and purpose, He used sinful people to accomplish great things to save His people, and the lineage to Jesus is quite amazing in itself. The walls of Jericho were brought down by voice. Various forms of angels are throughout. Communication through dreams, burning bushes, and even a donkey.
Also Jesus - the ultimate form of creativity, love, justice, and sacrifice. I can’t imagine a more tragic event, that happened at the perfect time, for a loving reason.
Even to me - the concept of aging and time is a creation; which means that beyond our universe… they may not even exist. What would you do without time? Without aging? What part of this world just don’t exist outside of our plane of existence? What is missing? What wonders lie beyond our lives that we will glorify our father with?
Let me tell you; this doesn’t happen from rules or “going through the motions.” No no, this is creativity. It’s everywhere, even in things you wouldn’t think about. You can creatively solve problems. You can creatively cook food. You can even creatively walk around your house. You can create emotions, you can create moments, you can create connections with other living creatures and others.
Create = creativity. It’s not just art; it’s the act of creating anything. There’s not a single human on this planet that hasn’t created something - because that’s what we were made to do.
But why? Why is creativity so important? Let’s go back to Genesis.
“God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.” Genesis 1:31 NIV
“Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.”
Genesis 2:3 NIV
Think about that for a second. Our infinite Lord of All decided to stop, admire, and make the day of no creation holy. But… why? Why not create further?
Have you ever made something, and then looked at it? As a parent, I feel this way a lot. My wife buys a swing-set, I spend a whole day putting it together (and take it apart because I inevitably didn’t follow the instructions properly), and I take a step back and look at it, checking for any problems or issues. It looks good! I can’t wait for the kids to start playing on it.
Oh wait… that sounds oddly familiar! We are in fact, made in His image, so inevitably we learn a lot about ourselves by understanding and building a relationship with Him.
Staying on the swing-set for moment - sure I didn’t invent it, but I built it, and created it from pieces and turned it into a fully functional toy for the kids. So I created it… now what? Creation is fulfilling. It hits you something deeper than other thing. You feel something inside being filled. You get the joy of seeing the kids play, creating their childhood… One moment at a time. You got to watch the fruits of your labor produce something more, and multiply - as their friends come over, when you move out, you leave it for the next family for more memories.
“..be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth… “ Genesis 1:28 AMP. I used this version because the wording here resonates with me. Yes, he’s referring to populating the earth and taking control, however it speaks as also an example. Not just physically multiply, but also multiplying everything you create, or allow to be created.
That also doesn’t require you to change and reach the world… remember that Jesus only had 12 disciples. He preached to crowds, healed folks, and all the amazing things, but he intentionally only created 12 disciples. He turned Saul to Paul to carry the Gospel around to cities.
But stop! Before you start thinking you’re about to change the world; that’s not the point here. We live in 2025, where we all feel like we should be the main character of the story.
But we are not. God is. This is His creation.
We are the NPC’s, but we have free will to make choices… not just to be programmed to do one of things in one place, like a video game is. What we do is magnified through God. Follow and believe, God will fill up your soul until it overflows, and out of the overflow will you affect the world around you.
Let God work through you; and the things you will create will be boundless - far beyond your knowledge.
